Jaipur Day Tour

Jaipur can be seen in a day, but only if the day is put together in the right order. The difference between a good visit and an exhausting one is almost entirely a matter of sequence: which monument at which hour, and which road between them. That is what a driver who works here every week actually sells you.

The order matters more than the list

Every operator in Jaipur visits the same five places. What separates a pleasant day from a hot, queueing one is when you arrive at each.

We start at Amber Fort early, before the coaches and before the heat — it sits outside the city and everyone else reaches it late morning. Jal Mahal, the palace standing in the middle of the lake, is on the way back and takes ten minutes. Then the walled city: the City Palace, still partly lived in by the royal family, and Jantar Mantar next door, an observatory of enormous stone instruments that still keep accurate time.

Hawa Mahal comes last, in the late afternoon, because the facade faces east and the light is on it then. Photographed at midday it is flat and grey; photographed at four it is the picture you came for.

What is not on the standard list

The flower market in Jaipur at dawn
The flower market, early. Marigolds by the sackful, before the city wakes.
Panna Meena ka Kund stepwell below Amber Fort
Panna Meena ka Kund, below Amber. Almost empty while the fort above it is full.

If you have the appetite for it, there are things worth more than a fifth monument: the flower and spice market at dawn, the block-printing workshops in Sanganer, the stepwell at Panna Meena ka Kund below Amber, largely empty while the fort above it is full. Tell us what interests you and we build the day around it.

A word about shopping

In Jaipur a great many drivers are paid a commission to deliver visitors to particular emporiums, which is why so many tours include shopping stops nobody asked for. We do not do this. If you want to buy textiles or gemstones we will take you somewhere honest and wait outside; if you do not, the subject never comes up.

What is included

  • Private air-conditioned car for the whole day
  • English-speaking driver who knows the city
  • Fuel, parking and all local taxes
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off
  • A route planned around the light and the crowds
  • Bottled water

What is not

  • Monument entrance tickets, paid on the day
  • A licensed guide inside the monuments, which we can arrange
  • Meals
  • The elephant ride at Amber Fort, which we do not book

Told upfront, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

Questions we are asked

What time does the day start?

Around half past eight from your hotel. Earlier is better in the hot months, and we are happy to start at seven if you are.

Are entrance tickets included?

No, and we say so plainly. Monument prices change and differ for Indian and foreign visitors, so quoting them inside a package usually means somebody is rounding up. You pay them on the day, at the counter.

Do we get a guide inside the monuments?

The driver is a driver: he will tell you plenty between stops, but he is not a licensed monument guide and cannot accompany you inside as one. Where a guide genuinely adds something, at Amber Fort and the City Palace, we can arrange a good local one.

Will we be taken to shops?

Only if you ask. We do not take commissions from emporiums, which is why our days are shorter on shopping and longer on Jaipur.

Is one day enough?

For the main sights, yes. Two days lets you add Nahargarh Fort at sunset and the quieter corners of the old city, and turns a checklist into a visit.

Can it continue into a longer trip?

Frequently it does. A day in Jaipur is how many of our multi-day journeys through Rajasthan begin, with the same driver carrying on afterwards.
